Post-Brexit Pathways: Opportunity Card & Professional Migration
A comprehensive guide for United Kingdom citizens wishing to live and work in Germany post-Brexit.
British citizens do not have an automatic right to work in the EU. However, UK citizens can enter Germany (90 days visa-free) and apply for a residence permit from within the country at a local Foreigners' Office (*Ausländerbehörde*). There is no Working Holiday Visa for UK citizens. The main routes are the Opportunity Card (*Chancenkarte*) for job hunting and the EU Blue Card for skilled professionals.
Chancenkarte. Points-based status for 1 year to search for a full-time job. Allows up to 20 hours/week of work while hunting.
For skilled professionals with a recognized university degree and a job offer that meets the salary requirements.
Standard visa for those with a job offer that does not meet the Blue Card threshold but is approved by the BA.
Fly to Germany (no entry visa needed). You have 90 days to register and apply for your residence permit.
Within 14 days of finding a room, register your address at the Citizens' Office (*Bürgeramt*) to get your Meldbescheinigung.
Book an appointment (*Termin*) at the *Ausländerbehörde*. Submit your application based on your job hunt or job offer.
Once approved, you'll receive your electronic residence permit card (eAT) linked to your UK passport.

Consulate General is in Edinburgh. While you can apply in the UK, it is often more convenient for UK citizens to apply from within Germany.
