Available Visa Types for US Citizens

US citizens can apply for the USA Working Holiday Visa, the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV), or various Skilled Residence visas. New Zealand uses a modern online system for almost all visa categories.

Main Work Routes

Working Holiday Visa

Specifically for US citizens aged 18-30. Allows you to work and travel for up to 12 months. Excellent for short-term and casual employment.

AEWV Visa

The primary route for skilled workers. Requires a job offer from an accredited employer. Validity typically tied to the employment contract (up to 5 years).

Green List Residence

Fast-track to residency for roles in high demand (e.g., healthcare, engineering, ICT). Allows for immediate residency or a work-to-residence pathway.

General Requirements

Valid US Passport
Approved Job Check / Employer Accreditation reference
Medical and Chest X-ray certificates (use an approved panel physician)
Character Certificate (FBI Background Check)
Qualifications check (NZQA assessment may be needed)

Typical Process (AEWV)

1
Employer Job Check

Your NZ employer must apply for a 'Job Check' to prove no local candidate is available. They will then send you a unique link or reference.

2
Online Application

Create a RealMe account on the Immigration New Zealand website. Complete your profile and upload medical/background documents.

3
Medical/Police Checks

Wait for INZ to review your health and character details. This is usually the stage where clarifications are requested.

4
eVisa Issuance

Once approved, you receive an eVisa. You can travel to NZ; your visa is digitally record and linked to your passport.
