Work & Residency Pathways for US Citizens

Relocating to Mainland China

Information based on current research for US citizens wishing to live and work in the People's Republic of China.

Available Visa Types for US Citizens

To work legally in Mainland China, US citizens must first obtain a Z Visa (Work Visa). Upon arrival, this is converted into a Foreigner's Residence Permit. Highly specialized professionals (Category A) may also apply for the R Visa (Talent Visa).

Main Work Routes

Z Visa (Standard)

The primary route for overseas employees. Requires a Foreigner's Work Permit Notification. Issued for 30 days and converted to a residence permit in China.

R Visa (Talent)

For high-level experts (e.g., world-renowned scientists, top business executives). Allows for 10-year multi-entry and simplified family processing.

M Visa (Business)

For business visits and short-term assignments. Does not allow for actual direct employment or receiving salary from a Chinese entity.

Service Note

The 'authentication' of US documents is a complex multi-step process involving the Secretary of State and the Chinese Embassy. It is highly recommended to use a visa agent for the document authentication phase to avoid delays.
