Work & Residency Pathways for US Citizens

Relocating to Canada

Information based on current research for US citizens wishing to live and work in Canada.

Available Visa Types for US Citizens

US citizens have several pathways into Canada, most notably under the USMCA (CUSMA) for professionals, intra-company transferees, and traders. Other options include the International Experience Canada (IEC) program (via ROs) and standard LMIA-based Work Permits.

Main Work Routes

USMCA Professional

Fast-track work permit for professions listed under USMCA. No LMIA required. Can often be processed directly at a Port of Entry (POE).

Intra-company Transfer

For employees moving from a US office to a Canadian affiliate. Allows for specialized knowledge or management work. Spouses are often eligible for open work permits.

IEC (Working Holiday)

For US citizens aged 18-35. Requires application through a 'Recognized Organization' (RO) since the US doesn't have a direct bilateral agreement.

General Requirements

Valid US Passport
Job Offer / Employer Contract in Canada
Original Degree Certificates and professional evidence
Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) - if entering by air
Police Clearance (if you've lived in countries other than US/Canada)

Typical Process (USMCA)

1
Contract Negotiation

Ensure your job offer explicitly states the role, salary, and that it falls under a USMCA-eligible category.

2
Gather Evidence

Print your original diplomas, Transcripts, and the specific appointment letter from your Canadian employer.

3
Port of Entry (POE) Application

US citizens can apply for their work permit directly at a major land border crossing or airport (e.g., Pearson, Trudeau, Vancouver).

4
Issuance of Work Permit

Pay the processing fee ($155 + $100 if applicable). The border officer will issue your paper work permit immediately upon approval.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) - Primary POE Contact

IRCC handles policy and online processing; CBSA handles entry and immediate issuance

Service Note

Applying at a physical POE is often much faster for US citizens than applying online. Ensure you have the 'Employer Portal' reference number (beginning with 'A') from your employer before you reach the border.
