Work & Residency Pathways for New Zealand Citizens
Information based on current research for New Zealand citizens wishing to live and work in the Federal Republic of Germany.
New Zealand citizens are "privileged" non-EU nationals. You can enter Germany visa-free for 90 days and apply for your residence permit (Work Visa, Blue Card, etc.) directly at the local Immigration Office (Ausländerbehörde) after arrival.
For highly qualified workers with a degree recognized in Germany and a job offer from a German employer meeting salary thresholds.
The points-based "Chancenkarte". Allows you to search for a job in Germany for up to 1 year while supporting yourself via part-time work.
Allows New Zealanders (18-30) to work and travel for 1 year. Can be applied for at missions abroad or within Germany.
Enter Germany as a tourist. You can legally stay for up to 90 days without any prior visa application.
Register your place of residence at the local Citizens' Office (Bürgeramt) within 2 weeks of establishing a home.
Submit your residence permit application to the local Ausländerbehörde before your 90-day visa-free stay expires.
Once approved, you will receive an "electronic residence permit" (eAT) which grants you legal work rights.

While New Zealanders can apply in Germany, it is sometimes faster or more certain to apply at the mission in Wellington, especially for the Opportunity Card, so that you arrive with full work rights.
