Work & Residency Pathways for Hong Kong Residents

Relocating to the USA

Information based on current research for Hong Kong residents wishing to live and work in the United States.

Available Visa Types for Hong Kong Residents

Hong Kong SAR passport holders primarily apply for the H-1B Specialty Occupation Visa, the L-1 Intra-company Transferee Visa, or the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa. Hong Kong residents are treated as a separate quota from Mainland China for many visa and green card categories, often leading to shorter wait times.

For skilled professionals with at least a bachelor's degree. Requires a US employer sponsor. Subject to a global annual cap and lottery.

L-1 Visa

For employees of multi-national companies being transferred from a Hong Kong office to a US parent or subsidiary office.

O-1 Visa

For individuals with extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business, or athletics. Common for high-level creative and tech talent.
