Work & Residency Pathways for Canadian Citizens
Information based on current research for Canadian citizens wishing to live and work in the United States.
Canadians have the unique privilege of the TN Visa under the USMCA (formerly NAFTA). Other paths include the H-1B and L-1 visas. Canadian citizens generally do not need a visa foil in their passport for many status types, allowing for faster processing at the border.
Fast-track status for professionals in certain fields (e.g., engineers, management consultants). Can be obtained directly at a Port of Entry (POE).
For employees of multi-national companies being transferred from a Canadian office to a US office. Allows for dual intent (Green Card path).
Specialty occupation visa via a lottery system. While Canadians still need the lottery, they avoid the embassy interview process after approval.
Gather your original diplomas, Transcripts, and the specific TN support letter from your US employer.
Present your documents to a CBP officer at a major land border crossing or airport pre-clearance center.
The officer will review your qualifications against the USMCA list and ask about your role. This usually takes 30-60 mins.
If approved, the officer will stamp your passport and issue an electronic I-94. You are clear to start work immediately.

For TN status, it is often best to apply at an 'Optimized' POE where officers are more familiar with professional status processing. Always bring original physical degrees, not photocopies.
