Working in Germany as an EU Citizen

As an Austrian citizen, you enjoy the right to live and work in Germany without a visa or work permit under the EU Principle of Free Movement.

EU Freedom of Movement

Austrian citizens do not require a visa or work permit to enter, live, or work in Germany. You have the same rights as German citizens regarding employment, working conditions, and social benefits.

Registration Requirements

Valid Austrian ID Card or Passport
Address Registration (Anmeldung)
German Health Insurance (Public or Private)
Employment Contract or Proof of Self-employment
Tax ID Number (Steueridentifikationsnummer)

Mandatory Steps

Anmeldung

Register your address at the local Citizens' Office (Bürgeramt) within 14 days of moving into an apartment in Germany.

Health Insurance Transfer

Select a German health insurance provider (Krankenkasse) and provide your details. If employed, the employer handles registration.

Tax ID Issuance

The Federal Central Tax Office will mail you your Tax ID after your initial address registration.

Social Security Number

You will receive a German social security number (Rentenversicherungsnummer) if you work in Germany.

Service Note

Austrians do NOT need an "Anmeldebescheinigung" in Germany (unlike the rule in Austria for other EU citizens); the standard "Meldebestätigung" is sufficient for residence and work.
