Information based on current research for Australian citizens wishing to live and work in the United States.
Australians have access to the exclusive E-3 Visa for specialty occupations. Other options include the J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa (Working Holiday) and the H-1B Visa. The E-3 is widely considered the best route due to its specialized nature for Australians.
Exclusive to Australian citizens. For specialty occupations (requires a degree). Infinite renewals allowed, and spouses can work in the USA.
Allows students and recent graduates (within 12 months) to work in the USA for up to 12-18 months. Commonly used for working holidays.
Standard specialty occupation visa. Subject to a global lottery with high competition. Valid for 3 years, extendable to 6.
Secure a job offer. Your employer must file and receive a certified LCA from the Dept of Labor (only for E-3/H-1B).
Fill out the DS-160 form online and pay the required non-refundable application fee.
Book an appointment at a US Consulate (Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth). Bring all your documents, including your offer and degree.
Following a successful interview, your passport with the visa will be returned via courier. You can then travel to the USA.
