Work & Residency Pathways for Australian Citizens

Relocating to Germany

Information based on current research for Australian citizens wishing to live and work in Germany.

Available Visa Types for Australian Citizens

Australians enjoy a privileged status and can enter Germany visa-free for up to 90 days. For employment, they can apply for a Working Holiday Visa, an EU Blue Card, or a standard Residence Permit for Employment either before travel or after arrival in Germany.

Main Work Routes

EU Blue Card

For highly qualified professionals with a university degree and a job offer that meets the minimum salary requirements (approx. €45,300 - €58,400 depending on the field).

Working Holiday

Allows Australians (18-30) to work and live in Germany for 1 year. This is a very flexible permit and can be converted to other residency types if a permanent job is found.

Qualified Professionals

For those with recognized vocational training or a degree who have found a job. Requires approval from the Federal Employment Agency (BA).

General Requirements

Valid Australian Passport
Recognized Degree (check via the Anabin database)
Signed Employment Contract / Offer from a German company
Proof of Health Insurance (compliant with German law)
Proof of sufficient funds (for initial stay or WHV)

Typical Process

1
Entry into Germany

Australians can enter Germany visa-free. You have 90 days to register your address and apply for a residence permit.

2
Address Registration (Anmeldung)

Register your place of residence at the local 'Bürgeramt' within 14 days of moving into an apartment.

3
Residence Permit Application

Apply for your specific permit (Working Holiday, Blue Card, etc.) at the local Foreigners' Authority (Ausländerbehörde).

4
Permit Issuance

After approval, you will receive an electronic residence permit (eAT) card. You can start working once the permit is authorized.

Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Authority)

Depends on your city of residence in Germany (e.g., Berlin, Munich)

Service Note

While Australians can apply after arrival, it is often faster to apply at a German Mission in Australia (e.g., Sydney or Melbourne) if you have a job offer ready, as local appointments in Germany can be hard to secure.
